Drug replacement therapy. There have been quite a few counselors and supposed “addiction experts” that somehow tried to convince others that this was the perfect method for curing addiction – they were blatantly lying to themselves and to others. The problem is not with the overall concept behind drug rehabilitation programs. It lies in the fact that in reality, little to no effort is made to get to the core of the actual problem of the person struggling with addiction. Continue reading

Around the holidays, many people are busier than they are normally throughout most of the year. Everyone is trying to make sure that the presents are in order, the festive dinner is prepared immaculately, and that nothing is left to chance when it comes to those amazing days that we get to spend with friends and family. For most, the holidays are a time to reflect on what we have in our life, what we are truly thankful for. This can be our job, our good health, our friends and family – whatever it is that makes us happy. For others that may be struggling with addiction, holidays are just as bleak as any other day.
Taking advantage of the first drug rehab program that opens its doors to you may not be the best choice you can make for yourself as a drug addict or alcoholic. For those that are in the position of intervening in an addict’s or alcoholic’s addiction, they too need to know that what they are doing is right all the way through the steps of convincing the abuser that they not only need help but the right help.
It may seem a little strange to suggest to a drug addict or an alcoholic, or those who are seeking help on behalf of these individuals, to recommend that they don’t choose a 12 Step Rehab Program. Too many people think that any type of drug rehab is better than nothing, but when it comes to addiction this can be a dangerous way of thinking. It is a long battle to get the drug or alcohol abuser to the point where they will accept help; and if it fails them they return back to their old ways, and getting a second chance to get them rehabilitated is slim. So putting them into a program such as a form of 12 step treatment that just does not have what the addict needs to be successful, is setting them up for failure.
We see the party line forwarded in articles, books, TV, movies, celeb meltdowns and of course at the local AA and NA meetings. The concept has become so engrained that even those who do not wish to agree find themselves ostracized and unaware of any other way to get help. It’s a constant drum beat and the message is overwhelmingly everywhere.
Florida leads the country in prescription medication abuse, as per DEA records. In 2009, Florida practitioners purchased 41.2 million pills of oxycodone compared to just 4.8 million pills purchased by practitioners in the other 49 states. Of the top 25 oxycodone prescribers nationwide, 18 were in Broward County and three others were in nearby Palm Beach County.
Most rehabs today are short term 28 day / 12-step programs. And if you visit websites like the AMA and many others you will find that somewhere around only 1 in 10 succeeds with this treatment –
Like many others outside of the non 12 step rehab community, these types of drug rehab programs believe that problems are a key factor in the root cause of addiction. But what makes non 12-step drug rehab programs so unique is that they focus on education, skills and techniques designed rehabilitate a person’s ability to
“Relapse is part of recovery…”
“You will be an addict the rest of your life…”
